Varanasi

Varanasi or Benaras, (also called Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the entire world. Mark Twain, an English author says "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, even older than legend and looks two times as old as most of them put together".

The tract of land lying between them to function as 'Varanasi', the holiest of all pilgrimages. Kashi is the ‘original ground' created by Shiva and Parvati. Varanasi is the microcosm of Hinduism, a city of traditional classical civilization, commissioned by myth and legend and sanctified by religion, it has always attracted a large number of pilgrims and worshippers from time immemorial.

Things to do:

There are nearly 100 Ghats--areas with steps leading down to the water along the Ganges River at Varanasi. A number of Ghats were assembled when Varanasi was considerably rebuilt under the Maratha Empire in the 1700s. They are either independently owned or possess particular meanings in Hindu mythology. A walk across the Varanasi Ghats is also an interesting experience (but be ready for filth and to be hassled by vendors). The list of things to do are as follows:

  1. Assi Ghat:

Assi Ghat is located at the southern end of this city, and therefore it's not quite as crowded and disorderly as some of the additional Ghats. But, it's a significant ghat for Hindus. Pilgrims bathe there until worshiping Lord Shiva, in the kind of huge lingam beneath a nearby pipal tree. There are some interesting shops and adequate cafes along the way. The Ghat is a favorite location for long-staying travelers.

The 84 Ghats lining the banks of the holy Ganga ease the inevitable dip that's deemed mandatory by the loyal needing liberation from the cycle of death and birth. Pandits wait here to offer you all sorts of services such as prayers for the souls of their deceased. Also a Ganga Aarti a Hindu lighting lamp towards worship to the Ganga river which will take up to 0-45 minutes in daily evenings which will be unforgettable moment for sure.

  1. Deer Park:

The deer park in Varanasi is located where Buddha taught his first sermon and proclaimed his Dharma and made the first Sangha; all of which can be held especially sacred by Buddhists. This deer park was first created with a Jataka King of Varanasi at 528 BC, according to the Chinese Monk Huien Tsang. This heavenly park has deer playing freely along with a number of beautiful different birds.

  1. Malviya Bridge:

Carrying rail trail on its own lower deck along with a road that carries India's Grand Trunk Road across the lake, this bridge extends 1048 meters and was initially known as the Dufferin Bridge, to be re-named at 1948.
