Surat

The city is thought to have been set up with a Brahman named Gopi, who constructed the Gopi Tank (water reservoir) at 1516 and called the region Surajpur or even Suryapur. Surat became the title of this city in 1520. It had been found by Muslims in 12th and 15th centuries. In 1514 the Portuguese traveler Duarte Barbosa explained Surat as a leading sea port.
