It's located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bounded to the north by the kingdom of Bhutan and the state of Arunachal Pradesh, to the east by the states of Nagaland and Manipur, to the south-east by the states of Mizoram and Tripura, and the west by Bangladesh and also the states of Meghalaya and West Bengal. The title Assam comes from the term asana, meaning "peerless" from the now-extinct Ahom language.

The neighboring countries of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya were part of Assam. Area 30,285 square miles (78,438 square km). Pop. (2011) 31,169,272. Assam has many wildlife sanctuaries, the most notable of which are two UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Kaziranga National Park (designated in 1985), on the bank of the Brahmaputra River, and also the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary (designated in 1992), close to the border with Bhutan.

From the Northeast region of India, Assam occupies a different place within the discipline of education. The general literacy rate of Assam is 64.28%, in which the literacy rate of man is 71.93percent and feminine 56.03%.
